Here are some of the butterflies and moths (both members of order Lepidoptera) sighted around campus this summer. Use the arrows at the bottom to scroll through the photos.
The giant swallowtail was a particular treat. Illinois's largest butterfly, it is as big as some students' faces, more than 5 inches from wingtip to wingtip. It was only seen on one or two days, but it stayed a long time to feed, and summer campers got a good look.
